Special Exhibition 'Extraordinary Techniques of Shippō'

Special Exhibition 'Extraordinary Techniques of Shippō'

The skill of modern Japan that astonished the world

Yokoyama Museum of Art

9/19(Fri)~12/21(Sun) 10:00~17:00

Shippō, made by fusing glaze onto a base of copper or silver, is compared to seven jewels due to its vibrant colors. The Owari Shippō, created by the Owari Domain samurai Kaji Tsunekichi in the late Edo period, sparked a wave of technological innovation as an important export item after the Meiji period. This exhibition introduces the exquisite beauty created by intricate inlays that astonished the world, centered around the Owari Shippō from the Meiji period to pre-war times and the new acquisitions by Imperial Art Craftsman Hiranuma Yasuyuki, showcasing an extraordinary world of Shippō with god-like colors and overwhelming techniques.
