Hittaka

Lantern designs emerge on the mountainside
The traditional events "Hittaka" and "Oshiguran-go" are believed to originate from the Genpei War in the Kasaoka City, Kinaura district. The fire festival "Hittaka," which means "to burn the fire high," is held on the night of a Saturday close to the old lunar calendar's 5th of May. Participants split into two groups, the Genji and Heike, and draw designs reflecting the current era on the mountain slope with lanterns. Stalls also line up, creating a lively atmosphere. Be sure to visit and see this cultural spectacle that colors the early summer of Kasaoka. ■Notes Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Kasaoka City
