Chugen Mantōrō

There are approximately 3,000 lanterns on the premises, including about 2,000 stone lanterns and about 1,000 hanging lanterns, all of which are lit with pure fire. In the past, during the Muromachi and Edo periods, residents of Naramachi conducted a lantern festival for rain prayers along the Kasuga-sando. The offering of pure fire to the gods for various prayers is the origin of the lantern festival. Lapis lazuli lanterns are also hung in the main shrine (Omiya) and the Wakamiya main shrine, creating a fantastical scene of the vermilion shrine floating in the pure darkness.

Admission: Special visit to the main shrine is 700 yen. Additionally, lantern offerings are possible with a donation of 3,000 yen or more.

Access (Public)

About 15 minutes by bus from JR/Kintetsu Nara Station to Kasuga Taisha main shrine, alight at the last stop.
