Fukui Castle, built in the 11th year of the Keicho era (1606) by Yuki Hideyasu, the first lord of the Fukui domain and the second son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, served as the stage for the prosperity of the Echizen Matsudaira family for about 270 years across 17 generations. It is said that at the time of its construction, it featured an imposing five-story main keep with a height of about 37 meters and multiple moats surrounding it. The Somei Yoshino cherry trees encircle the moat, attracting many visitors in spring who come to enjoy the blossoms.
