Aoi Watanabe of Wabe-Gama, who continues the Shiraiwa-yaki tradition in Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture, is holding his solo exhibition for the first time in two years. Shiraiwa-yaki was established during the Edo period and became a major ceramic production area, but it ceased operation in the Meiji period. About 70 years later, Watanabe's parents revived it, establishing Wabe-Gama. It is now the only kiln of Shiraiwa-yaki. One of the characteristics of Shiraiwa-yaki, known as sea cucumber glaze, is said to be the most beautiful among similar glazes found in various regions.
