Known as one of Japan's three major fire festivals, the Yamaguchi Tanabata Lantern Festival has its origins about 600 years ago when Lord Moriaki Ōuchi lit high lanterns on bamboo to pray for the welfare of his parents on the night of Tanabata Bon. Tens of thousands of red lanterns lit with real fire line up in the central shopping district of Yamaguchi City, painting the night of Yamaguchi in red.
