Mushigano Great Nembutsu

The 'Dancing Nembutsu' that still lives on in Uenohara
The Great Nembutsu is an event where people gather together to perform Nembutsu. It was seen in various places until the Edo period, but currently, the only place that has preserved it in its complete form is the Mushigano area in Yamanashi Prefecture. The origin of the Great Nembutsu is unknown, but locally it is said to have started as a memorial for Prince Goryō, who met an untimely death over 600 years ago, and Princess Hinazuru. In 2022, it was registered as an UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage as one of the 'Furyu Dance'. The Mushigano Great Nembutsu Preservation Association showcases it around January 16th of the old calendar and August 16th of the new calendar at the Mushigano Assembly Hall.
