Kawachi Festival

A magnificent waterborne procession is a must-see
It is said to convey the triumphant return of the Kumano navy, which participated in the Genpei War and achieved victory, as celebrated by the Kawachi Shrine's annual festival. Designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of the country, the highlight of this festival is the water parade where three elaborately decorated ships (mifune), pleasure boats, oar boats, and lion dance boats form a fleet ascending the river, resembling a picture scroll.
